Walk like a Bristolian zombie

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

GurtLushMonkey sent us this video of last year’s zombie walk in Bristol. Check it out for all manner of lurching, leering, strolling and, erm, texting zombies. We especially like the man in the suit who gets caught in the throng, around 00:46.

He’s got an arm off!

Check out this nifty knitted zombie!

Hannah Simpson knits the undead (amongst other things) for her etsy store. Anyone else making corpse crafts?

We were tipped off to this handsome chap by eagle-eyed folks on twitter. So thanks @louby, @snotd, @harkenback, @iamlumberjack, and @astroair. (Extra points go to @louby for “I spit on your crochet” and @harkenback for “darn of the dead”.)

Film4 Frightfest’s guide to zombie films you might not know

Friday, July 24th, 2009

We asked Paul McEvoy at Film4 Frightfest to give us the lowdown on the horror festival’s zombie greats. And we challenged him to come up with some undead films you might not have seen. Check it out:

Zombies, zombies, zombies.. those perennial slow walking or fast running fan favourites seem to be everywhere.

At this years Film 4 FrightFest we are showcasing a bunch of new films featuring the rotting rotters. From the sensational French short film Paris by Night of the Living Dead to the UK low budget feature Zombie Women of Satan with burlesque zombie babes. Nasty Nazi zombies rear their ugly heads in Norwegian snow bound splatter Dead Snow and it’s all out hard gore action in French zombies vs hoodlums vs cops feature The Horde. Finally we will be short film showcasing Canadian entry Deadwalkers – zombies in the wild wild west. Something for every fan
of the human munching bad guys.

One of our weekend highlights is sure to be our Sunday evening treat Andy Nyman’s 100 Best Deaths, where the star of the simply superb Dead Set will be hosting a live guide to the best and goriest cinema shocks that is sure to include some great zombie action!

Casting a look back  there are a handful of fright flicks that have featured zombies that you may not have seen:

Let Sleeping Corpses Lie aka Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue is a 1975 Italian entry from director Jorge Grau that while campy retro fun also delivers some fine shock sequences and great splatter scenes – well worth seeking out!

Dance of the Dead which we screened at FrightFest  to tremendous acclaim last year is a contemporary shock and laugh barrage of sick humor and edge of the seat chills. Gregg Bishop’s work culminates at the school prom dance of the movies title.

The Dead Outside is a beautifully shot slow burn Scottish zombie virus outbreak feature that ratchets the tension and paranoia to intense levels in the Highlands. Director Kerry Anne Mullaney is a name to watch out for.

Spain’s Amando de Ossorio served us up a whole slew of zombie films in the early 1970’s including Tombs of the Blind Dead. The films have been released globally under so many different titles that it boggles the mind! All the movies focus on the 13th Century knights Templar and their insatiable flesh lusting ways. Atmospheric and scary.

So, with George A Romero’s eagerly awaited “…of the Dead” with us shortly and a proposed 28 Days/Weeks Later spin-off due and a rich vein of big screen terror still to be chewed in the brilliant on-going comic book series Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s The Walking Dead, it looks as though the zombies will be stalking us for many years to come!

Keep running!!

Paul

How to look like a zombie

Friday, July 17th, 2009

You might be able to walk the (slow or fast zombie) walk, but do you look the part? Geeky Tom let make-up artist Lauren Dunn turn him into a zombie to provide you all with this neat tutorial. (We’re not sure he knew exactly what he was letting himself in for. There are points in this video where he looks a bit worried.)

You can go through this step-by step in pictures too.

Lauren got all the make-up she used from Screen Face. If you want to stock up, here’s the list of products in the order she used them:

Deathwheel
Ben Nye Fresh scab – use a stipple sponge to apply it for a really scabby effect
Screenface Blood
Ben Nye Dry Dirt in Ash

Got any hot zombie make-up tips of your own? We want to know! Add them to the comments below.

Noel Fielding is King of the Zombies

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Noel Fielding

Zombies, undead and rotting corpses, behold your leader!

We’re very excited about this.

Filming starts on Thursday 6th August at the Big Chill. From 7pm we’ll be filming the highlight of the zombie festival “The Running Feast”. This will be presided over by King of the Zombies, Noel Fielding and will be staged as a live event with music from Toddla T and other special guests. Captured humans will be released and chased through an obstacle course by hordes of hungry zombies. Will you be one of them??
In order to take part you’ll need to be a Big Chill ticket holder and look like one of the undead. Once the entertainment area has openend up (around 3pm), you’ll only be able to get into the Open Air Stage field if you’re a zombie. There will be zombie-themed DJ sets and other entertainment to keep you in the mood. Make up stations will be on site during the day, but we’d love people to turn up already zombified – we want to see your rotting corpses!

Zombies will be especially welcome at British Sea Power’s live accompaniment of Man of Aran and Winged Migration. Then there’s more undead fun with zombie movies from from dusk till dawn in the Film4 Cinema Tent, featuring two of the ‘…Dead’ films by zombie movie legend George A. Romero, John Carpenter’s haunting The Fog and Sam Raimi’s cult horror-comedy classic, Evil Dead II. And if you feel like strutting your undead stuff, you can shuffle over to the zombie disco in Big Chill Nights.

Throughout the weekend smaller events will be taking place, including a zombie battle of the bands, an undead fashion show, zombie weddings and a zombie rave. If you want to take part in any of these events let us know, either by emailing us or come and say hello at our Zombie HQ by the Film4 Cinema Tent.

Zombies will also be particularly welcome at the Dereliction Drive-In, a post-apocalyptic drive-in cinema where you can join graffiti gurus Pete Fowler and Kid 30 in pimping your undead ride. Chill out to mixes from beyond the grave from Monsterism, Hexstatic and Osymyso, or add your own ghoulish sounds to the mix with our AudioBoo crew.

The culmination of the weekend’s life and death antics with be the ceremonial burning of the zombie on Sunday night – a 20m wooden effigy of living death itself!

It’s going to be amazing, join us and bring out your undead!

Watch out for Canadian zombies

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Timo Grubing has been posting a zombie a day since 31 October last year, and is going to carry on until 31 October this year.

Yesterday’s was pretty good:

The 20 June’s is chilling:

And 30 December’s was done on an etch-a-sketch:

See the rest of them at Blog of the Living Dead.
